-So và therefore cùng là adverb và conjunction, và khi cùng có nghĩa “bởi vậy cho nên” thì dễ nhầm khi dùng. Trong trường hợp so làm conjunction, và therefore làm conjunctive adverb nối 2 mệnh đề độc lập thì trước so, dùng dấu phẩy comma, trước therefore, dùng dấu chấm phẩy semicolon (xem phần cuối).

B. Therefore:

-As an adverb:

Will you therefore resign?
I would, therefore, like a response.

-Therefore as a conjunctive adverb: (consequently, for that reason, bởi vậy, cho nên, vì vậy)

There are many people who want to buy the painting; you should, therefore, expect the price to be rather high. [để ý semicolon trước “you”. Nếu therefore ở giữa câu, thì ngăn bởi 2 commas.] Có nhiều người muốn mua bức họa, nên bạn cũng biết là giá sẽ khá cao.

There are many people who want to buy the painting; therefore you should expect the price to be rather high. [Trước therefore có semi-colon, nối 2 mệnh đề independent clauses.)

I didn’t read the test very well; therefore I was surprised I did it very well.

C. Therefore & so used interchangeably. Therefore is more formal. But note the semicolon used before therefore, and a comma before so:

He wanted to study late, so he drank another cup of coffee.
He wanted to study late; therefore he drank another cup of coffee.
She is ill, and so cannot come to the party.
She is ill; therefore she can’t come to the party.
